5 tips for your first cabin purchase

Planning to buy a cabin for the first time? Here are the most important things to consider before placing a bid.

1. Define what you'll use the cabin for

Is it winter holidays with skiing and cross-country, or summer with swimming and fishing? The answer determines whether to look at mountains or the coast. Also consider whether you need year-round or seasonal use.

2. Set a realistic budget

Remember that the purchase price is just the beginning. Add transfer tax (2.5%), registration, potential renovations, and annual running costs of NOK 30,000–60,000. Use our cabin calculator for a realistic estimate.

3. Research the homeowners association

Most cabin areas have a homeowners association. Check the annual fee, what infrastructure is maintained, and whether major investments are planned. A well-run association is worth its weight in gold.

4. Inspect the condition thoroughly

Request a condition report or arrange your own inspection. Check roof, foundation, wet rooms, electrical and plumbing. A cabin with hidden defects can become expensive. Winter inspections reveal frost issues.

5. Think long-term

A cabin is a long-term investment. Consider accessibility for the whole family, travel distance, and how the area may develop. The best cabin areas have good infrastructure and active homeowners associations.
