Geilo – Gateway to the Hardangervidda
Norway's most traditional mountain station – in the heart of Europe's largest mountain plateau
Vibe Check
Geilo has over 100 years of mountain traditions and offers a unique blend of classic Norwegian mountain culture and modern amenities. Located in the middle of the Hardangervidda, Europe's largest mountain plateau, it is easily accessible by direct train from Oslo Central Station. With 33 alpine slopes, 220 km of cross-country trails and a range of cabin villages for every taste, Geilo is one of Norway's very best mountain destinations.
Geilo is one of the few places in the world where you can step off the train and walk straight to the ski slopes. The Bergen Railway, one of the world's most scenic train routes, carries you directly from Oslo Central Station to the heart of the mountain village in 3.5 hours.
Hardangervidda National Park, which surrounds Geilo, is Europe's largest mountain plateau and home to Europe's last herd of wild reindeer. In winter, the plateau becomes a paradise for cross-country skiers, with 220 km of groomed trails. In summer, it's a mecca for hikers with hundreds of kilometres of marked paths.
